Hike through the world's northernmost botanical garden — a surreal oasis of Arctic wildflowers — then trek to the snout of Russell Glacier for face-to-face contact with the Greenland Ice Sheet. Nature at its most raw and beautiful.
What to expect
Starting at Narsarsuaq airport valley, you walk a birch-scrub trail past the remarkable sub-Arctic garden — planted by Danish scientists — where over 400 species of flora bloom in improbable abundance. The trail then rises to the glacial moraine, and suddenly the luminous blue-white wall of Russell Glacier towers before you. Your guide explains the Ice Age geology and reads the landscape's scars left by retreating ice. The return hike takes in panoramic fjord views before a transfer back to the tender landing.
Good to know
Wear sturdy hiking boots and waterproof layers; the moraine is rocky and can be muddy. Total hiking distance is approximately 9 km round-trip with 200m elevation gain — moderate fitness required. Pre-book a private departure slot to align with your tender schedule.
