Meet one of Fair Isle's handful of remaining traditional knitters in their own studio for a private demonstration and the chance to commission a bespoke piece. The island's geometric colour-work patterns are UNESCO-recognised and globally coveted.
What to expect
Mati Ventrillon, the island's most internationally celebrated designer-knitter, welcomes guests into her studio overlooking the sea. She explains the historical roots of each motif, demonstrates the two-colour stranded technique on original hand-frames, and walks you through her archive of pattern notebooks. You may handle and try on finished garments, discuss a bespoke commission, and leave with a signed, numbered piece that carries a certificate of Fair Isle provenance. The setting — a working croft with Atlantic light flooding through the windows — is as memorable as the craft itself.
Good to know
Contact Mati directly via her website well before your cruise date. Studio visits are by appointment only and limited to small groups of 4–6. The studio is a 10-minute walk from the South Harbour. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
