Glide by private boat across Hvalsey Fjord to the finest preserved Norse ruins in Greenland — the very church where the last recorded Norse wedding was held in 1408. Stand inside walls that have endured 600 years of Arctic silence.
What to expect
A scenic 45-minute boat crossing through glassy fjord waters framed by dramatic hillsides brings you to a deserted shoreline. You step ashore and walk directly into the roofless but hauntingly intact granite walls of Hvalsey Church — the jewel of Norse Greenland. Your guide narrates the arc of the Norse settlement: arrival, flourishing, and the mysterious disappearance. On the return, scan the water for harbour seals and seabirds riding the thermals above the cliffs.
Good to know
Pre-book directly with Tasermiut Camp well in advance — capacity is very limited and demand from expedition ship passengers is high. The boat departs from Qaqortoq harbour (Hvalsey is a tender port; your ship will anchor off Qaqortoq). Allow 3–4 hours total. Wear layered, windproof clothing and sturdy shoes for the shoreside walk.
