Hike the ridge above Hvalsey Church ruins for panoramic views that sweep from Norse stonework to open fjord and floating icebergs. This is the perspective that photographs simply cannot prepare you for — raw, vast, and completely untouched.
What to expect
After the boat crossing to Hvalsey, rather than stopping only at the church, your guide leads you up a clear, well-graded trail through low Arctic scrub and bilberry heath to the ridge crest above the ruins. The ruins shrink below while the entire fjord system opens up. Your guide identifies the outlines of associated farmstead structures visible only from elevation. The descent brings you back through lush valley floor to the shoreline for the return boat.
Good to know
Moderate fitness required — the ascent is approximately 150–200 metres. Sturdy hiking boots essential; trekking poles recommended. Combine with the standard Tasermiut Camp boat tour to Hvalsey; request the ridge hike extension when booking. Weather in southern Greenland can change rapidly — layers and a waterproof shell are mandatory.
