Walk the full 4 km circuit of Rhodes' UNESCO-listed medieval walls at sunrise with a licensed archaeologist — a privilege granted to very few visitors. The layered fortifications, moats, and towers are among the best-preserved in the world.
What to expect
You begin at dawn at St. George's Tower, when low golden light rakes across the honey-coloured limestone battlements. Your archaeologist traces the building campaigns of the Knights Hospitaller, explaining how each Grand Master added towers and bastions after successive Ottoman sieges. Inside the dry moat, fig trees and wildflowers grow where cannon-fire once echoed. The D'Amboise Gate, the tallest bastion in the Mediterranean of its era, is a jaw-dropping finale. The walled city spreads below you — minarets, bell towers, and Byzantine domes coexisting in the world's most intact medieval urban fabric.
