Hike to the clifftop Acropolis of Lindos before the crowds arrive, with a private archaeologist who brings the ancient sanctuary of Athena Lindia — and its 300 m sea cliffs — vividly to life. One of Greece's most dramatic ancient sites.
What to expect
A private driver collects you from the port (approx. 50 minutes to Lindos village). You ascend the cobbled path through whitewashed Lindos village as the town wakes, arriving at the Acropolis gate at first light. Your archaeologist narrates the site's 3,000 years of continuous use — Dorian sanctuary, Hellenistic stoa, Roman temple, Byzantine chapel, and Knights' garrison layered on the same limestone pinnacle. The Doric columns of the Temple of Athena Lindia glow pink in the morning light. From the Knights' fortress, the view over the circular harbour of St. Paul's Bay — where the Apostle is said to have sheltered — is simply unforgettable.
Good to know
Depart port by 06:30 for a sunrise arrival. The site opens at 08:00 — arrive at the gate early. The uphill walk is 20 minutes on cobblestones; a donkey ride alternative is available for those who prefer it. Return to port by early afternoon, well ahead of all-aboard.
