Discover one of the Mediterranean's most magical wildlife spectacles — the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) — in private, guided by a local naturalist. From June to September, Jersey Tiger Moths carpet the valley in a shimmering, rustling tapestry.
What to expect
A private driver takes you 25 km southwest of Rhodes Town to the wooded gorge of Petaloudes. The valley is laced with wooden boardwalks and stone bridges over a crystal stream shaded by oriental sweetgum trees. Your naturalist explains the extraordinary microclimate — the resin of the sweetgum trees attracts thousands of Panaxia quadripunctaria moths, which cling to trunks and branches in living mosaics of black, white, and scarlet. The silence, the dappled light, and the soft rustle of wings is profoundly atmospheric. A picnic of local cheese, figs, and chilled white wine in a forest clearing is the perfect finale.
Good to know
Peak season is July–August; the phenomenon is visible June–September. Wear comfortable walking shoes — paths are uneven. The round trip from port is approximately 4–5 hours including travel, ideal for a morning excursion. Book your naturalist guide 1–2 weeks ahead.
