Step ashore on the uninhabited Isle of Noss — a National Nature Reserve accessible to just a handful of visitors each day — and walk the wild clifftop circuit past colonies of great skuas, gannets and puffins with the Atlantic roaring below.
What to expect
From Lerwick, take the short Bressay ferry, cycle or walk 3 miles across Bressay, then hail the tiny inflatable Noss Sound ferry for its three-minute crossing. Once on the island, a 4-mile clifftop circuit reveals Da Noup — sheer sandstone faces alive with over 100,000 breeding seabirds. Bonxies (great skuas) patrol the moorland interior, and you may be 'divebombed' as you pass their nesting territories. The small visitor centre offers reserve leaflets and context; the warden is on hand for questions. This is one of the rawest, most exhilarating walks in the entire British Isles.
Good to know
The Noss Sound ferry operates daily except Monday, and only in reasonable weather (May–August). Allow a full 5–6 hours from Lerwick. Sturdy walking boots and full waterproofs are essential. The Bressay ferry runs frequently from Lerwick; the crossing takes 7 minutes. Pre-check NatureScot's seasonal opening before your visit.
