Visit the southern tip of Shetland — a dramatic RSPB reserve where puffins nest within arm's reach of the clifftop path — crowned by a historic Robert Stevenson lighthouse with a world-class exhibition inside.
What to expect
A short drive south of Lerwick delivers you to the southernmost point of mainland Shetland, where Atlantic winds sculpt the clifftop grass and thousands of seabirds wheel overhead. Puffins, razorbills, and guillemots nest almost at your feet. The restored Stevenson lighthouse — built in 1821 — houses a fascinating exhibition on Shetland's lightkeeping history. The views across the Sumburgh Roost tidal race are simply spectacular.
Good to know
Puffins are present late April–mid-August — prime cruise season. Arrange a private taxi or hire car from Lerwick (approx. 30–40 min drive). Combine with a visit to the adjacent Iron Age village of Jarlshof (Historic Environment Scotland, GBP 9 adult entry) for a full-day cultural and natural immersion. Wear windproof layers.
