Wander the ancient island heart of Syracuse — a UNESCO-listed labyrinth of Baroque piazzas, a Greek temple embedded inside a cathedral, and a legendary papyrus spring — with a specialist local guide who brings 2,700 years of history vividly to life.
What to expect
The tour opens at the Temple of Apollo, the oldest Greek temple in the Western world, before threading through the baroque grandeur of Piazza del Duomo — widely considered one of Italy's most beautiful squares. Inside the Cathedral, ancient Greek columns rise through the Christian nave in one of architecture's great collisions of eras. A stroll to the Fonte Aretusa, the freshwater spring where papyrus still grows beside the sea, provides a mythological finale that feels genuinely otherworldly.
Good to know
Ortigia is walking distance or a short taxi ride from the cruise pier (EUR 10–12). Morning light on the Duomo is spectacular — aim for a 9 am start. Wear comfortable shoes on the cobblestones. The guide can extend the tour to include a Sicilian street-food tasting at the Ortigia market on request.
