Trek the ancient kalderimi stone-paved mule paths of Mount Pelion — the mythological home of the wise centaur Chiron who tutored Achilles — through chestnut forest, cascading streams and traditional villages, guided by a local mountain expert.
What to expect
A private transfer from the port drops you at the trailhead above Portaria or Tsagkarada, where the air cools immediately under the canopy of centuries-old chestnut and plane trees. Your guide navigates the beautifully preserved kalderimi — flat-stone mule trails engineered by the Ottomans — through steep forested gorges punctuated by the sound of running water and birdsong. The path opens onto a traditional village square in time for a restorative lunch of local pies and mountain greens at a family-run taverna. The descent threads through terraced orchards of apple, pear and olive before your transfer returns you to port refreshed and slightly awed.
Good to know
Suitable for guests with a moderate fitness level; trails are well-maintained but involve elevation gain of 300–500 m. Wear proper walking shoes — not sandals. Transfer from port to trailhead is approximately 40 minutes. Route and distance are tailored to your group on the day; confirm the itinerary with your guide at booking. Carry a light layer — mountain temperatures can be 6–8°C cooler than the port.
