Journey to the wild tip of the Lüderitz Peninsula to stand beside the replica of Bartolomeu Dias's 1488 cross — the furthest point of European exploration at the time — while scanning the sea for African penguins on Halifax Island directly below.
What to expect
A 4x4 vehicle navigates the dramatic, boulder-strewn peninsula road, passing Agate Beach — where semi-precious stones litter the shoreline — and Shark Island with its sobering colonial history. At Diaz Point, the Atlantic hurls itself against the rocks with extraordinary force, and the padrao cross marks a pivotal moment in world exploration history. Halifax Island, just offshore, hosts one of Namibia's most accessible African penguin colonies, visible through binoculars from the clifftops.
Good to know
Diaz Point is approximately 22 km from the pier — a private vehicle is the only practical option. The road is unmade in parts; a 4x4 is recommended, especially after rain. The site is always open and free to access once at the point. Allow 3–4 hours for the full peninsula loop. Kali Tours is best reached via the Cruise Critic contact thread for the most current pricing.
