Tonga sits just west of the IDL and hosts one of the planet's last swimmable humpback whale populations. A private catamaran charter brings you face-to-face with these ocean giants before a guided IDL stargazing session under Tonga's flawlessly dark skies.
What to expect
Depart Neiafu harbour aboard your private catamaran as the crew scans the turquoise Vava'u waters for humpback whale spouts. When a mother-and-calf pair is sighted, your marine biologist guide gently eases you into the water for a breathtaking, respectful swim alongside creatures up to 14 metres long. After a gourmet Tongan lunch on deck, sail to a deserted motu (islet) for snorkelling over coral gardens. As night falls, your astronomer guide sets up a high-powered telescope to navigate the Southern Cross and Jupiter's moons — a sky made extraordinary by Tonga's position near 180° longitude.
Good to know
Whale season is July–October; confirm your cruise dates align. Swimming with humpbacks requires reasonable swimming ability and comfort in open water. A licensed marine biologist guide is mandatory under Tongan law. Book 6–8 weeks ahead in peak season as boats fill quickly.
