Follow in Paul Gauguin's footsteps to the enchanting mill-village of Pont-Aven, just 15 km from Concarneau. Private art-focused guide leads you through the storied Bois d'Amour woodland, riverside artists' studios, and the renowned Musée de Pont-Aven — a true pilgrimage for lovers of Post-Impressionism.
What to expect
The 15-minute drive from Concarneau deposits you in one of the most painterly villages in all of France: 14 working mills on a river barely 100 metres wide, cascading over mossy granite. Your guide walks the Bois d'Amour woodland trail — dappled, cathedral-quiet — then through the Saturday market to the museum, whose permanent collection includes Gauguin, Sérusier, and the entire Pont-Aven School. Finish with a kouign-amann (the buttery cake invented here) at a riverside salon de thé before the gentle drive back.
Good to know
Allow a minimum of 3–4 hours in Pont-Aven; 4 hours is ideal. Confirm your return time with the driver so you're back at the pier with at least 45 minutes to spare. The museum is closed on Mondays.
