Walk the sacred earthworks of a 17,000-year-old civilisation with a private NPS-affiliated guide. The Great Temple Mound and the subterranean Earth Lodge — its original clay floor intact — are among the most extraordinary pre-Columbian sites in North America.
What to expect
Your guide meets you at the visitor centre and leads you across the sweeping mound complex, pausing at the Great Temple Mound for panoramic river views. You duck into the restored Earth Lodge, a ceremonial council chamber with a 1,000-year-old eagle-shaped clay platform still embedded in the floor. The guide weaves Indigenous oral tradition with cutting-edge archaeology, bringing the Muscogee (Creek) legacy vividly to life. The park is rarely crowded, so the atmosphere feels genuinely timeless.
Good to know
The park is 2 miles east of downtown Macon — a 10-minute taxi or rideshare. Pre-book your Step-On guide through the CVB at least 48 hours ahead by calling 478-743-1074. The Earth Lodge has limited entry capacity; ask for the first slot of the day. Allow 2.5–3 hours; well within a typical all-aboard window.
