One of America's most hauntingly beautiful Victorian garden cemeteries, Rose Hill is the resting place of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley — as well as Confederate generals, antebellum poets, and Yellow Fever epidemic victims. A guided walk here is Southern Gothic storytelling at its finest.
What to expect
You enter through the grand 1840 gate and immediately sense the atmosphere: ancient oaks draped with Spanish moss frame marble obelisks and weeping-angel statues. Your guide pauses at the graves of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, sharing the lore of two musicians cut down in eerily similar motorcycle accidents one block apart. Confederate officer monuments sit beside the humble markers of Yellow Fever victims, telling a complex and honest story of a 19th-century city. The hilltop section offers a breathtaking panorama over the Ocmulgee River valley — one of the finest views in Macon.
