Panama Canal Partial Transit: Ocean-to-Lake Small Boat Journey

Board a small vessel and transit the legendary Agua Clara Locks from the Atlantic into Gatun Lake — one of the most awe-inspiring feats of engineering on Earth. Watching 100,000-ton ships rise beside you in the lock chambers is a bucket-list moment like no other.

What to expect

Your journey begins at the Amador Causeway operating pier, where a bilingual guide sets the scene before you cast off into the Canal. The small boat threads through the Agua Clara New Locks as the chamber doors seal behind you and millions of gallons of fresh water lift your vessel — along with the giants around you — to Gatun Lake. A full lunch, soft drinks, and water are included on board, letting you linger on deck without interruption. The tour runs 4–5 hours, ending at the Colón side where you rejoin your cruise ship.

Good to know

Pre-book directly well in advance — small-boat transits sell out months ahead. Tour ends in Colón; tender or pier access back to ship is coordinated by your cruise line. All-aboard times typically allow a comfortable return if you choose a morning departure.
