Stand at the edge of the Gatun Locks — the largest set of locks on the Panama Canal — and watch supertankers and container ships squeeze through with just centimetres to spare in what may be the most jaw-dropping feat of civil engineering on the planet.
What to expect
A short transfer from the Gatun Lake pier delivers you to the Gatun Locks visitor complex, perched directly above the triple-chamber lock system. Your guide explains the gravity-fed water system and the precise choreography of mule locomotives guiding ships through the chamber walls. On lucky days, a Neopanamax vessel fills the entire lock width — an almost incomprehensible sight. The visitor centre also houses original engineering drawings, archival photographs, and interactive models of the canal's construction.
Good to know
Morning slots (8:00–10:00 am) tend to have the highest ship traffic. The experience runs 2.5 hours; allow 15 minutes each way for transfers. Book ahead as capacity at the observation platform is managed. Comfortable walking shoes required — the terraces involve stairs.
