Journey upriver by dugout canoe to an authentic Emberá indigenous village on the edge of the Chagres rainforest — a rare, respectful cultural immersion into one of Panama's oldest civilisations, culminating in a traditional meal and artisan market.
What to expect
After a scenic drive to the Chagres River, you board a hand-carved dugout canoe piloted by an Emberá guide who navigates you upstream through dense jungle to the village of Emberá Drua. Villagers welcome guests with traditional music and dance in an open-sided thatch meeting house, and women offer to apply intricate jagua body art — a temporary dye derived from jungle fruit. A communal lunch of fresh river fish, plantain, and yuca, prepared over wood fires, follows. Before departure, the artisan market offers museum-quality woven baskets and carved tagua figurines; proceeds go directly to the community.
Good to know
Duration is approximately 5–6 hours including transfers; this is best suited to port days with a late all-aboard time (confirm carefully). Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting the canoe wet. Cash in USD is appreciated for purchases at the artisan market. Private bookings available for groups of 2–8.
