Lace up for the short, rewarding hike to Flagstaff Hill — the panoramic crown of Port Douglas — then descend to legendary Four Mile Beach for a morning swim in the Coral Sea. Pure Queensland: blazing views, swaying palms, and pristine sand. The perfect port-day opener.
What to expect
The 1.3 km trail from Rex Smeal Park climbs gently through coastal scrub to the hilltop, where the panorama opens up over Four Mile Beach, the Coral Sea, and the rainforest-covered ranges. Linger for photographs before descending to Four Mile Beach — one of Australia's most beautiful stretches of sand — for a morning swim in the stinger-netted enclosure. The town's famous Sunday Market at Anzac Park, cafés, and boutiques are a short stroll away.
Good to know
Both the hike and beach are walkable from the port precinct — no transport needed. The trail takes approximately 30–45 minutes return. Stinger suits are recommended for swimming October–May; the netted enclosure on Four Mile Beach is safe year-round. An ideal early-morning excursion before the heat builds; complete well within 3 hours.
