Go behind the scenes of the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier — the largest movable flood barrier on Earth — with a private expert guide at the Neeltje Jans visitor centre. An engineering marvel and a profound meditation on humanity's relationship with the sea.
What to expect
Your expert guide meets you at Neeltje Jans island, sitting in the very heart of the Eastern Scheldt barrier. You'll walk across the top of the barrier itself, gazing out simultaneously at the North Sea and the protected tidal basin — a view found nowhere else on Earth. Inside, exhibits tell the story of the catastrophic 1953 North Sea Flood that killed nearly 2,000 Dutch citizens and the 30-year engineering odyssey that followed, culminating in this colossus of 65 concrete pillars and 62 steel gates spanning 9 kilometres. A marine biologist or Delta Works engineer can be arranged to deepen the experience. The nearby seal sanctuary and tidal ecology exhibits are world-class.
