Visit the only surviving Scottish staple-port warehouses in continental Europe — a pair of 15th-century merchants' houses on Veere's quayside that tell the captivating story of the wool trade between Scotland and Zeeland. An utterly unique cultural encounter you simply cannot find anywhere else in the world.
What to expect
Housed in two beautifully restored Gothic merchant's houses right on the Veere quayside, this intimate museum immerses you in the world of the Scottish staple port that operated here from 1444 to 1799. Exhibits include original medieval artifacts, wool-trading ledgers, portraits of the Scottish burgesses, and period furnishings that evoke the lives of the prosperous merchants who called Veere home for centuries. The buildings themselves are the spectacle — step-gabled facades, original painted beams, and views straight across the harbour from leaded windows. Combine this with a visit to the adjacent Grote Kerk for a full medieval Veere experience.
Good to know
The museum is a 2-minute walk from the cruise quay — almost unmissable on the main waterfront. Open Tuesday–Sunday, 11:00–17:00 (April–October). The entire visit takes about 45–60 minutes, leaving the rest of the day free.
