Experience one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World — the Netherlands' awe-inspiring Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier — at the Neeltje Jans visitor centre, just 20 minutes from Veere. Walk on top of the mighty Delta Works and understand how the Dutch literally conquered the sea.
What to expect
A short private transfer from Veere drops you at the purpose-built visitor island of Neeltje Jans, set right in the middle of the Eastern Scheldt estuary. Here you walk along the top of the 9-kilometre storm surge barrier, with the North Sea on one side and the tidal estuary on the other — a perspective that is simultaneously humbling and thrilling. Inside, the interactive museum tells the story of the catastrophic 1953 floods that killed nearly 2,000 Dutch people and the 30-year project that followed to ensure it could never happen again. Boat tours around the barrier pillars are available for those who wish to see the scale from the water.
Good to know
Pre-arrange a private taxi or car from Veere harbour (approx. 20 mins each way). Allow 2.5–3 hours on site. Book museum entry online in advance at neeltjejans.nl to skip queues. Check all-aboard time carefully and allow a comfortable buffer.
