Enkhuizen was once the fourth-largest city in the world — richer than New York. A private local expert leads you through its perfectly preserved medieval lanes, spice-trade warehouses, and twin-towered Drommedaris gatehouse.
What to expect
Begin at the 16th-century Drommedaris tower at the harbour mouth, where the city once levied tolls on every ship entering the Zuiderzee. Pass through the Koepoort city gate, along the old moat walls, and into the Westerstraat — a parade of Golden Age merchant façades untouched by modernity. Duck into the 15th-century Westerkerk to see its ornate carved choir stalls. Finish on a terrace overlooking the inner harbour with a jenever (Dutch gin) tasting paired with local bitters — a ritual unchanged since the VOC era.
Good to know
Tours depart directly from the cruise pier on request. Book at least 2 weeks in advance and confirm the ship's schedule with the operator. The full route is flat and walkable; comfortable shoes suffice. Allow 2–2.5 hours.
