Glide out onto the vast Ijsselmeer aboard a lovingly restored 19th-century Dutch sailing barge (tjalk) on an exclusive private charter — sails up, wind in your face, and the medieval skyline of Enkhuizen receding behind you.
What to expect
Your skipper briefs you on the history of the Zuiderzee and the monumental Afsluitdijk dam that transformed it into a freshwater lake. Once the traditional gaff-rigged sails are raised, the silence and scale of the Ijsselmeer become palpable. The skipper points out the silhouettes of Hoorn and Medemblik across the water — rival VOC cities — and explains the fierce 17th-century trading rivalries. On calmer days, you may anchor mid-lake for a chilled glass of Dutch white wine and a platter of Noord-Holland cheese and smoked eel before sailing back.
Good to know
Charters depart from the Enkhuizen marina, a 5-minute walk from the pier. Book well in advance — traditional sailing barges are limited. Confirm departure and return times against all-aboard. Light layers and non-slip shoes are essential even in summer.
