Set in the original British command headquarters at Oosterbeek, this immersive WWII museum puts you inside Operation Market Garden — the audacious 1944 airborne assault that defined 'A Bridge Too Far.' Arguably the most moving war museum in Europe.
What to expect
The elegant 19th-century Villa Hartenstein, once Urquhart's HQ, now holds state-of-the-art multi-sensory galleries that recreate the nine-day battle with cinematic intensity. Personal artefacts — a Para's rosary, a child's diary — anchor the grand strategy to individual human stories. The tranquil grounds and the adjacent Airborne Cemetery, just a short walk away, add a profoundly contemplative dimension. Plan for 2–3 hours minimum to do the full experience justice.
Good to know
Oosterbeek is just 7 km west of Arnhem — a 15-minute taxi ride. The Airborne Cemetery (free, open daily) is a 5-minute walk from the museum and should not be skipped. Book tickets online in advance to avoid queues. Combine with the John Frost Bridge in Arnhem centre on the return journey.
