The Netherlands' Open Air Museum is a living, breathing 44-hectare village spanning 400 years of Dutch life — windmills, farmsteads, craft workshops, and costumed artisans in the forests of Arnhem. TripAdvisor's #1 attraction in the city, and deservedly so.
What to expect
Step into a reconstructed 17th-century farmstead, ride a vintage tram between exhibits, or watch a miller coax flour from wind-power in a working 18th-century mill. Each building has been dismantled from its original Dutch location and rebuilt here with painstaking authenticity. Seasonal demonstrations — cheese-making, tulip cultivation, Delftware painting — add a hands-on luxury that no conventional museum can replicate. The wooded grounds and café terraces make lingering effortlessly pleasurable.
Good to know
The museum is located on the northwest edge of Arnhem — a 10-minute taxi ride from the river port. Plan for at least 3 hours; a full day is ideal. Pre-book tickets online. The on-site restaurant serves traditional Dutch lunch — do not skip the pea soup and stroopwafel.
