Join a small-group wildlife boat tour along the bird-rich southern cliffs of Súðuroy, home to some of the largest Atlantic puffin colonies in the North Atlantic alongside gannets, razorbills, guillemots, and Arctic skuas.
What to expect
Departing Tvoroyri harbour, the boat tracks south along cliff faces that rise hundreds of metres above you, honeycombed with thousands of nesting seabirds in summer. Puffins bob alongside the hull with comical indifference, their beaks stuffed with sand eels. The naturalist guide identifies species, explains the seabird's extraordinary migratory range, and shares why the Faroese have harvested — and fiercely protected — these colonies for over a thousand years. The boat pauses in a sea cave whose acoustics amplify the roar of surf into a cathedral sound before returning to Tvoroyri.
Good to know
Best from late May to early August when puffins are nesting on ledges and burrows are active. Bring a camera with at least a 200mm lens for frame-filling shots. The tour is approximately 2.5 hours, departing morning or early afternoon — confirm timing against your all-aboard.
