Hike into the remote Hvannhagi valley — a near-mythical green amphitheatre of waterfalls and ancient farmstead ruins hidden between Súðuroy's highest peaks, rarely visited even by Faroese people. This is the island at its most primeval.
What to expect
The trailhead sits above the village of Hvalba, a 15-minute drive north of Tvoroyri. From there, the guide leads you down into a valley so enclosed by basalt walls that it feels like a lost world — ribbons of waterfall feed a crystal river, and the remains of stone-walled farmhouses abandoned centuries ago scatter the valley floor. Wildflowers blanket every surface in summer. The silence, broken only by wind and water, is absolute. The return ascent offers sweeping views east towards the Faroese mainland islands shimmering on the horizon. Total hiking time is approximately 4–5 hours at a comfortable pace.
Good to know
Sturdy waterproof hiking boots and trekking poles are strongly recommended — the valley floor is boggy. The hike is moderate-to-challenging; not suitable for guests with knee or ankle issues. Pre-book 2 weeks ahead. Allow 5.5–6 hours total from Tvoroyri pier including transfers, leaving time before all-aboard.
