Architect Kengo Kuma's cliff-face masterpiece on the Tay waterfront houses Scotland's only dedicated design museum — a world-class showcase of Scottish creativity from Charles Rennie Mackintosh to contemporary innovation.
What to expect
The building itself is the first exhibit: raw concrete facets inspired by Scottish clifftops rise dramatically from the Tay's edge, and the interior soars with natural light. Inside, the centrepiece is the reconstructed Oak Room by Charles Rennie Mackintosh — the only complete Mackintosh interior outside Glasgow — displayed in climate-controlled splendour. Changing major exhibitions rotate through fashion, graphic design, product design, and architecture. A private V&A curator traces the threads connecting centuries of Scottish making and invention, from tartan to turbines.
Good to know
The V&A is a 3-minute walk from Dundee Cruise Terminal — the closest world-class attraction to the berth. Free entry to the permanent collection means spontaneous visits are easy; however, private curator tours should be pre-arranged. Special exhibitions require timed entry tickets — book online in advance. Open daily; allow 2 hours minimum.
