Board a private speedboat to remote Savo Island and hike its live volcano at sunrise, where rare megapode birds nest in geothermal sand — one of the Pacific's most extraordinary wildlife encounters. Utterly raw and unforgettable.
What to expect
Your private speedboat departs Honiara harbour before dawn, crossing the Iron Bottom Sound — named for the warships that litter its floor — as the sky turns amber over the Solomons. On Savo, a local guide leads you up the volcanic flanks through dense rainforest to the steaming crater rim, where hundreds of megapode birds excavate nests in the geothermally heated black sand. The heat rising from the earth underfoot is otherworldly. After the hike, cool off with a snorkel over pristine coral before the return crossing.
Good to know
The round-trip boat ride is approximately 1.5 hours each way; allow a full 7–8 hours from port. Depart no later than 6:30 am to make the sunrise hike and return well before all-aboard. Confirm weather and sea conditions the evening before with your operator. Wear layers — the crater rim is surprisingly cool.
