Plunge beneath the surface at Bonegi Beach to dive two enormous Japanese landing ships sunk in 1942 — among the most accessible and awe-inspiring WWII dive sites anywhere in the Pacific. History and marine life in breathtaking combination.
What to expect
A short drive west from Honiara brings you to the twin wrecks of Bonegi I and Bonegi II — massive Japanese Maru-class vessels lying in 10–40 metres of crystalline water. Your PADI-certified guide from Tulagi Dive leads you along the vast hull of Bonegi I, now draped in magnificent soft corals and patrolled by lionfish, barracuda and enormous bumphead parrotfish. The prop shaft and engine room remain eerily intact. Bonegi II rests at a shallower depth, perfect for a second dive or an extended snorkel for non-divers in the group.
Good to know
Bonegi Beach is approximately 20–25 minutes by vehicle from the port — arrange transport with Tulagi Dive directly. Open-water certification required for the deeper sections of Bonegi I; non-divers can snorkel the shallower wreck. Dive gear must be booked in advance. Allow 4–5 hours total from port and return.
