Ride the island's dramatic west coast to witness Mapu'a 'a Vaea — the 'Chief's Whistles' — hundreds of limestone blowholes erupting in unison like a natural pipe organ, then sweep past the Royal Palace and ancient flying-fox colonies in a single grand arc.
What to expect
Leaving the wharf, your driver-guide sweeps you through central Nuku'alofa for a slow pass of the Royal Palace grounds and the century-old Royal Tombs before the road opens up to the wild south-west coast. The star of the show is Mapu'a 'a Vaea, where hundreds of coral-shelf blowholes shoot jets of seawater simultaneously up to 30 metres into the air — one of the most dramatic natural spectacles in the entire Pacific. You also stop at a genuine Tongan handicraft village to watch tapa cloth being beaten and pandanus mats being woven before the coast road loops back to Nuku'alofa.
Good to know
Approximately 3 hours; perfect for ports with a shorter call. The blowholes are most spectacular at high swell — your guide will advise on conditions. Light footwear is fine; the blowhole platform is paved coral rock. Book directly with Teta Tours in advance.
