Espiritu Santo harbours one of the Pacific's last healthy dugong populations — snorkelling alongside these gentle, ancient mariners in open water is a wildlife encounter that belongs on every serious traveller's life list.
What to expect
Your guide picks you up dockside and transfers you by small boat to the seagrass meadows where dugongs graze in the morning calm. Slip silently into the water and fin towards these 300 kg gentle giants as they browse the seafloor — an encounter so surreal and peaceful it regularly moves guests to tears. Green and hawksbill sea turtles are almost guaranteed as a secondary sighting. Your guide narrates the ecology of this rare habitat and the conservation efforts protecting it, adding depth to every moment.
Good to know
Dugong sightings are very high probability but cannot be guaranteed — honest wildlife tourism at its best. Wear a rash vest and apply reef-safe sunscreen only. The tour runs approximately 3–4 hours; ideal for morning departures to leave the afternoon free for Champagne Beach. Book as early as possible as private slots are strictly limited.
