Glide along the forbidden Athos Peninsula aboard a private classic sailing yacht, gazing up at 20 living Byzantine monasteries clinging to cliffs above the Aegean. No women have set foot here in over a millennium — your boat is as close as it gets.
What to expect
Depart from Ouranoupolis, the last town before the monastic border, and follow the western coast past eight or more active monasteries — Docheiariou, Xenophontos, Simonopetra and more — while a specialist guide narrates their thousand-year histories. The glass-bottom hull reveals the crystalline seabed below as you anchor in secret coves for a swim. Chilled Macedonian wine and mezze are served on deck as the 2,033-metre Holy Mountain fills the horizon. You're back in port well before all-aboard.
Good to know
Departs from Ouranoupolis harbour, approx. 3 hrs by road from Thessaloniki. Pre-book the private charter at least 2–3 weeks ahead in peak season (Jun–Sep). Women are legally prohibited from landing on the peninsula; the boat tour is the definitive alternative. Allow ~6 hours door-to-door from port.
