Step inside the living culture of the Huna Tlingit at their ancestral homeland of Hoonah — the largest Tlingit village in Alaska — for an intimate clan house ceremony, storytelling, and hands-on art with master carvers.
What to expect
You are welcomed into the magnificently restored 1912 Huna Tlingit Cannery, where totem poles carved by local masters stand sentinel in the great hall. Clan elders lead intimate storytelling sessions recounting Raven myths and the forced exodus from Glacier Bay. Master carvers guide you through adze techniques on red cedar, and traditional regalia is displayed with its full ceremonial context. The experience closes with a tasting of locally harvested foods — smoked salmon, seal oil, and wild berries — prepared by community members.
Good to know
