Venture deep into the Tongass National Forest — the largest temperate rainforest on Earth — with an expert naturalist guide who knows where brown bears fish, wolves travel, and ancient moss-draped Sitka spruce grow to cathedral scale.
What to expect
Lacing up in Juneau (gateway to Chatham Strait cruising), your certified naturalist guide leads you beneath a canopy of 400-year-old Sitka spruce and western hemlock, where devil's club, skunk cabbage, and luminescent mosses carpet the forest floor. Salmon streams attract brown bears in season — your guide reads fresh sign and positions the group safely for outstanding wildlife observation. The hike is paced for discovery, not distance, with frequent stops for ecology interpretation and photography. You return to the dock with a genuine understanding of why Southeast Alaska's rainforest is one of the planet's great wild places.
Good to know
Operates from Juneau; transfers from the cruise dock are straightforward (short taxi or walk). Bear-viewing hikes are most productive July–September during salmon runs. The private guide option is strongly recommended for a Fantasize-level experience. Waterproof hiking boots and rain gear are essential; bear spray is carried by the guide.
