Step inside an 11th-century monastery impossibly fused into a 300-metre sheer cliff face — one of the most dramatic sacred sites in the entire Mediterranean. A white-robed monk personally welcomes you, shares the icon of the Virgin, and offers traditional loukoumades and Amorgian wine.
What to expect
The approach is a steep 300-step staircase cut into the ochre cliff, rewarded by one of the most jaw-dropping architectural visions in Greece — eight storeys of blinding white built directly into the rock. Inside, treasures include Byzantine manuscripts, rare icons and gold-threaded vestments. A resident monk hosts you in the reception room with lokum, ouzo and a blessing. The panorama over the Aegean from the entry terrace alone justifies the climb.
Good to know
No advance booking required — arrive early (opens 08:00, closes ~14:00) to beat midday heat and secure the most serene visit. Shoulders and knees must be covered; wraps are provided at the gate. Allow 1.5 hrs including the climb. From Katapola port, hire a private taxi (approx. EUR 20–25 one-way) or a scooter.
