St. Michael's Cave: Rock of Gibraltar's Subterranean Cathedral

Descend into the Rock itself and explore Gibraltar's most spectacular natural wonder — a vast limestone cavern draped in ancient stalactites, used as a WWII hospital and now an otherworldly concert venue.

What to expect

Carved by millennia of rainfall through Jurassic limestone, St. Michael's Cave plunges 300 metres into the Upper Rock and opens into a chamber so grand it has hosted classical concerts and ballet performances. Subtle lighting picks out the amber and white stalactites, some hanging for 150,000 years. Interpretive panels trace the cave's use by Neanderthals, its wartime role as a planned emergency hospital, and its extraordinary acoustics. The temperature drops noticeably inside — a welcome respite from the Mediterranean sun — and the silence, broken only by dripping water, is genuinely transporting.
