Wander through the opulent state rooms of Bamberg's imperial New Residence, then step into the terraced Rose Garden — with 4,500 rose bushes and panoramic views over the cathedral and red-tiled rooftops — one of Germany's most romantic vistas.
What to expect
The New Residence was home to the prince-bishops of Bamberg and the first Holy Roman Emperor, and its state rooms reflect centuries of imperial ambition — gilded stucco, Flemish tapestries, and painted ceilings that demand you look up at every turn. A guided tour of the interior reveals the remarkable German Baroque collection and the emperor's apartments restored to their 17th-century grandeur. Stepping outside into the Rose Garden, the view unfolds: Bamberg Cathedral rising behind a cascade of blossoms, the Old Town rolling away to the river. It is, by common agreement, one of the most photographed — and most felt — moments in Franconia.
Good to know
The palace and Rose Garden are a short uphill walk from the cathedral. Book palace entry in advance online via the Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung website. Rose Garden is open year-round (best May–October for blooms). Allow 90 minutes total.
