Ride a rugged over-sand vehicle across the wild, wind-sculpted barrier beach of Chappaquiddick to the remote Cape Poge Lighthouse — a wilderness adventure that most visitors never reach. Osprey, shorebirds, and pristine Atlantic coastline await.
What to expect
A short ferry hop to Chappaquiddick launches this adventure, followed by a thrilling over-sand vehicle ride along a barrier beach spit that juts into Nantucket Sound. Your Trustees naturalist guide identifies nesting terns, ospreys and seals along the way and explains the fragile dune ecology shaped by centuries of Atlantic storms. The Cape Poge Lighthouse — isolated, photogenic and rarely visited — stands at the tip of the spit with sweeping views across to Nantucket. The return journey skirts the bay side, where herons stalk the shallows in utter stillness.
Good to know
Tours depart from the Chappaquiddick side; take the 3-minute On Time Ferry from Edgartown (USD 4 per person). Pre-book the Trustees tour directly as capacity is strictly limited. Allow 2.5–3 hours including the ferry crossing. Wear sturdy shoes and bring binoculars.
