Menemsha Sunset Clambake: Lobster at the Water's Edge

Settle into Menemsha — Martha's Vineyard's legendary working fishing village — for a classic New England clambake of steamed lobster, clams, and corn, eaten literally on the beach as the sun drops into Vineyard Sound. The island's most iconic culinary ritual.

What to expect

Menemsha harbour is a working fishing village of weathered grey shacks, lobster traps stacked to the eaves, and small draggers bobbing at the pier — as visually perfect as it is culinarily serious. The Homeport has been serving the island's finest clambake since 1930; order your lobster, clams, and corn to take down to the public beach, where you'll eat with your hands, ocean-side, as the sun stages its nightly spectacle over Vineyard Sound. It's a meal that requires no formality and rewards every sense. Pair with a crisp New England white or local craft beer from a nearby shop.

Good to know

Menemsha is approximately 11 miles from Vineyard Haven and 9 miles from Oak Bluffs — arrange private transport or a taxi in advance. The sunset clambake is best timed 2–3 hours before all-aboard. The Homeport is cash-friendly but does accept cards; arrive early as the lobster sell-out is real.
