Ride the legendary tidal race of Calf Sound on a small-group zodiac-style boat, threading sea caves and sculpted basalt stacks while grey seals and seabirds perform all around you. One of the most dramatic coastal passages in the Irish Sea.
What to expect
Departing from the charming harbour at Port Erin, you hug the southern coastline of the Isle of Man as dramatic slate cliffs give way to the churning Calf Sound. Your guide reads the tides like a native, positioning you perfectly to watch Atlantic grey seals hauled out on the Thousla Rock. Guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, and in season, puffins, crowd every ledge. Basking sharks are regularly spotted in summer waters. The return leg traces the wild western shore of the Calf for a completely different perspective.
Good to know
Best May–September when puffins are present and basking sharks are active. Layered clothing and waterproofs essential. Confirm departure time relative to your ship's all-aboard time; most trips run 2–3 hours.
