Step inside Cape Clear's extraordinary heritage at the island's own museum, home to the Fastnet Experience — the definitive exhibition on the lighthouse that defined transatlantic seafaring. Then walk the island's loop paths for sweeping Wild Atlantic Way panoramas.
What to expect
The Fastnet Experience at Cape Clear Museum presents the complete story of one of the world's most famous lighthouses — from its construction in the 1900s to the tragic 1979 Fastnet Race. Artefacts, oral histories, and photography bring the maritime drama of the south Irish coast to life. Afterwards, board the island's minibus for a narrated loop of Cape Clear's highlights — ancient stone ruins, the ruins of a 14th-century castle, and cliff-edge viewpoints where Atlantic seabirds wheel overhead. The combination is a rich, slow-paced immersion into island life.
Good to know
The island bus tour runs approximately 45 minutes and departs regularly from the harbour — cost is EUR 5 per person, book on arrival. The museum is a short walk from the ferry pier. Allow at least 3 hours on the island for both. Cape Clear ferries run from Baltimore; return tickets are EUR 60 for a family of four (2+2).
