Follow Cape Clear's spectacular cliff-top loop trails past Iron Age ruins, a ruined 14th-century castle, and sweeping panoramas south to the Fastnet Rock and beyond. Ireland's most southerly inhabited island, walked at your own unhurried pace — pure, elemental wilderness.
What to expect
Cape Clear's loop walks range from 3 to 8 kilometres and thread through a landscape that feels utterly unchanged by time. Ancient ogham stones, the roofless shell of Dún an Óir castle, and the ruins of Ireland's oldest dateable Christian church sit alongside grazing ponies and wildflower meadows. The southern cliffs are some of the most dramatic on the island, with the Fastnet Rock visible on clear days as a lone granite sentinel in the Atlantic. The island's resident community of Irish speakers gives the whole place an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Ireland.
Good to know
Collect a free trail map from the ferry pier on arrival. Wear waterproof walking shoes — paths can be muddy year-round. The island bus tour (EUR 5 per person, approx. 45 min) is a great complement if time is limited. Confirm ferry return times carefully against your all-aboard time; the last ferry back to Baltimore must not be missed.
