Lundy is England's first Marine Conservation Zone — its crystal-clear waters host one of the country's largest Atlantic grey seal colonies. Slip beneath the surface for an unforgettable snorkel alongside these playful giants in their protected underwater kingdom.
What to expect
The rocky coves on Lundy's eastern shore shelter a resident population of Atlantic grey seals year-round. A guide leads your small group into the shallows where seals approach out of sheer curiosity, often making direct eye contact before corkscrewing away. The water is strikingly clear — visibility can reach 10+ metres — revealing colourful kelp forests, cuckoo wrasse and spider crabs below. This is a wild, unscripted encounter with England's largest marine mammal.
Good to know
Best experienced between April and October when water temperatures are most comfortable in a wetsuit. Confirm snorkel guiding availability with the island office ahead of your visit via the Landmark Trust website. Wetsuits are essential; bring your own or hire on the island. Tidal timing matters — the guide will advise on the best window.
