Cross to Iona and step inside the restored 6th-century abbey founded by St Columba — the island from which Christianity spread across Scotland and northern England. A place of profound spiritual atmosphere and extraordinary medieval artistry.
What to expect
The ferry from Fionnphort takes just ten minutes across the Sound of Iona, depositing you on an island of startling luminous light and white-sand beaches. The restored Benedictine abbey dominates the village: its Norman arches, medieval cloister garden and intricate Celtic high crosses are extraordinary in person. Guided talks by the resident Iona Community bring the story of Columba's 563 AD arrival to vivid life. The adjacent Reilig Odhráin graveyard holds the ancient tombs of Scottish, Irish and Norse kings.
Good to know
Iona is most easily reached via the passenger ferry from Fionnphort, Mull (Caledonian MacBrayne, approx. £3.60 return). Time your visit to allow at least 2 hours on the island. The abbey can be quietly busy in peak season — arrive early for the most peaceful experience. Confirm the HES entry fee on arrival as pricing is updated seasonally.
