Visit an authentic Harris Tweed weaver at their home loom shed in the Outer Hebrides — still the only place on earth where genuine Harris Tweed can legally be made. Witness the extraordinary craft up close, then commission a bespoke length of cloth to be woven in your chosen colours.
What to expect
Your private guide collects you and drives through the dramatic Harris landscape to a crofter-weaver's home, where the rhythmic clack of a Hattersley loom fills a small shed attached to the house. The weaver walks you through the entire process — from dyed Hebridean wool skeins to the finished, orb-stamped cloth — and invites you to try the treadle yourself. You may select a colour palette and pattern for a bespoke metre or two of cloth to be posted to you once woven. The experience closes at the Harris Tweed Hebrides mill in Shawbost for a behind-the-scenes tour.
Good to know
Best paired with a port call at Stornoway or Tarbert, Harris — both within easy driving distance of working weavers. Allow 3–4 hours. Bespoke commissions take 4–8 weeks to complete and can be shipped internationally. Contact Harris Tweed Hebrides directly to arrange a private weaver visit, as these are not listed as standard retail experiences.
