Venture into the two most haunting caves in the Hebrides — Cathedral Cave, where persecuted Catholics held secret Mass, and Massacre Cave, where the entire MacDonalds of Eigg (nearly 400 souls) were suffocated by the MacLeods in 1577. History that stops you in your tracks.
What to expect
The walk follows the south coast from Galmisdale, passing ruined blackhouses before ducking into the low entrance of Massacre Cave, a natural fissure in the basalt where the scale of the atrocity becomes horribly real. Cathedral Cave, nearby, is a soaring natural chamber with a natural altar stone, still used for outdoor worship in summer. Your guide contextualises both sites within the violent clan politics of 16th-century Scotland and the island's later Clearances. The walk is moderate on coastal paths.
Good to know
Torch/headlamp essential inside the caves — guides provide them. Wear waterproof footwear; cave floors are wet. Tender to Galmisdale Bay; caves are approximately 30–40 minutes' walk south along the coast path. Pre-book the guide; the 2.5-hour format suits most port calls with comfort.
