Join a specialist naturalist guide for an immersive wildlife walk across Eigg's moorland, coastline, and lochan habitats — home to white-tailed and golden eagles, otters, corncrakes, and nesting seabirds. The Hebrides at their most gloriously wild.
What to expect
Setting out from Galmisdale in the early morning (the optimal wildlife window), you traverse coastal grasslands and rocky shore where otters hunt in the kelp. The guide scans the ridge of An Sgùrr for the white-tailed eagle pair that regularly soars above the plateau. Corncrakes rasp invisibly from the hay meadows — one of Britain's rarest birds, and Eigg is a stronghold. Binoculars and spotting scopes are provided. Groups of six or fewer ensure genuinely attentive guidance.
Good to know
Early tender ashore maximises wildlife activity — coordinate with the ship for first-call tender priority. Bring an extra warm layer; coastal wind chill can be sharp even in summer. Book via the Eigg Guiding Co. in advance for cruise-call dates. The 3-hour walk fits comfortably within most port calls with time for lunch at the Galmisdale Bay Café afterwards.
